Recent studies have indicated that Long Covid is believed to be due to the clotting in small blood vessels or microvascular circulatory system affecting all organs including the brain. Altogether, as many as 200 symptoms have been associated with Long Covid. Even though an individual has recovered from the Covid-19 disease, a lingering effect can decrease blood supply throughout the body compromising the performance of some of the organs in the body. Chronic inflammation has also been implicated in the pathophysiology of Long Covid.
HBOT and Long Covid
During HBOT, the air pressure inside a hyperbaric chamber is increased to a level higher than atmospheric pressure. This increased pressure allows the lungs to gather more oxygen than at normal air pressure. As a result, the bloodstream becomes saturated with oxygen, which is then transported throughout the body. Overall, HBOT is a safe and effective medical treatment that can provide significant benefits for patients with various medical conditions. But like any medical procedure, it requires the supervision of trained medical professionals in a specialized hyperbaric facilities.
Below is an excellent illustration of how HBOT works to counter Long Covid. This 2024 study by Dr. Alan Katz et al., demonstrating how hyperbaric oxygen therapy effectively treats the pathophysiology of Long Covid: clinical review.
